xTool Error Codes: What They Mean and How to Fix Them

xTool error codes differ by machine. The S1's M222, M363 and M53 codes, the P2 and P2S's XCS errors, and how to find and fix the code on any xTool laser, from xTool's own support articles.

Quick fix

Look up the code for your exact model on support.xtool.com: each code has its own fix guide. Most S1 pauses (lid open, flame detected, device moved) clear when you fix the cause and press the machine's button to resume. Hardware codes such as motor driver, overtemperature or flash storage errors need xTool support, which replies by email within one business day.

xTool doesn't publish one master list: each machine has its own codes and support article. Find the code shown in xTool Studio (Creative Space) or on the machine, then match it to your model below. These tables come from xTool's support site (checked October 18, 2026); each code there links to a step-by-step fix.

Quick fix

  1. Note the exact code and what the machine was doing.
  2. Fix the obvious cause (lid, material, flame, a moved machine) and press the machine's button to resume, which xTool says resumes paused S1 jobs.
  3. If it returns, open your model's error-code article on support.xtool.com and follow that code's guide.
  4. Still stuck? Submit a help ticket with a work log, a photo of the serial number and a video of the error. xTool says it replies by email within one business day.

What to do

  • Flame (M222 S9, M53 F5): stop and check the material immediately. Remove scraps, use air assist, and reduce power or increase speed for that material. See laser engraver safety.
  • Device moved or position limits (M222 S4, S20): make sure the S1 sits level and wasn't bumped, and that your design fits inside the work area.
  • Distance sensor (M363): the autofocus probe couldn't measure. Clean around the probe, place the crosshair on a flat part of the material, and check the material isn't too small for the probe to land on.
  • Key, baseplate or riser (M53 S0, C1, C2, W2): reinsert the safety key, and check the baseplate or riser base is seated and recognised.
  • Overtemperature (M53 W0): let the laser module cool and check ventilation.
  • Communication, storage or motor errors (M222 S21/S22, M53 T0, M8): restart the machine and software; if they persist, these usually need xTool support.

xTool P2 and P2S codes

xTool's P2 series article lists these XCS errors, each with its own guide: Z-axis and U-axis driver exceptions; safety lock locking or unlocking exceptions; fan current too low or too high; X, Y and Z-axis homing failures; water tank flow too low; water-cooled fan exception; and air pump current exception. For water flow errors, check the water level and that the pump and hoses aren't blocked or kinked before anything else.

xTool P3 and other models

The P3 has its own article covering main control board disconnection codes and controller overheating; the MetalFab cutter lists collision, travel and homing codes. For F-series, M-series and other machines, search support.xtool.com for your model plus "error code".

Still not working?

If the fixes above don’t help and your laser is out of warranty, a repair can cost more than a replacement. Compare current models before you pay for parts.

Frequently asked questions

What does M222 S9 mean on an xTool S1?

Flame detected. The S1 pauses when its flame sensors see fire. Check the material, put out any flame, clean debris from the bed, consider air assist and lower power or more speed, then press the machine's button to resume. Never ignore it.

What does M53 T0 mean?

xTool lists it as a flash storage or SD card exception or failure on the S1. Owners report it can persist after swapping the SD card; if the linked fix guide doesn't help, contact xTool support.

Why does my xTool say the lid is open when it's closed?

On the S1, M222 S7 means processing was started without a project file or with the lid open. Check that the lid is fully closed and the job was sent from the software. If it keeps appearing, the lid sensor may need attention; follow xTool's guide for the code or contact support.
