8.3/10 research score CO2

List price $2,999 (as of Oct 2026)

Best for: Acrylic signs and thick wood cutting for a home business

Our verdict

The best-value CO2 laser we cover at its $2,999 store price: it cuts thick wood and any acrylic, including clear, in one pass, with camera placement and passthrough. Reviewers found it "simply works". It weighs 99 lb, is certified Class 4, needs venting outside, and can't mark bare metal.

The P2S is xTool's mid-size CO2 laser: 55W, a 600 × 305 mm (23.6 × 12 in) bed, dual 16 MP cameras and AutoPassthrough for boards up to 118 inches long. It was $2,999 on xtool.com when we checked, with xTool listing $4,499 as the compare-at price. We compared xTool's published specs with what reviewers found. We have not tested it ourselves; see how we research.

Why choose CO2 over diode

A CO2 beam cuts clear and coloured acrylic, which blue diodes cannot, and cuts thick wood far faster. The P2S's one-pass figures (18 mm basswood, 20 mm acrylic) are well beyond any diode machine we cover. It can't mark bare metal without a marking spray; for that you need a fiber or infrared laser. Our diode vs CO2 vs fiber guide explains the trade-offs.

What reviewers found

The Gadgeteer's Michael Strange found the P2S arrived fully assembled; setup meant filling the water tank with distilled water and antifreeze and checking the beam path, which he found approachable as a CO2 newcomer. "The cuts were clean, and there was very little to no charring," he wrote, and batch processing engraved nine names on basswood circles in 13 minutes. His summary: "What I appreciate most about the P2S is that it simply works."

His complaints were few: the wide-view camera's image quality is poor, the conveyor and rotary setup needed help from videos, and at about 100 lb it takes two people to lift onto the riser base.

Watch-outs

  • Size and weight. 1 m wide and 99 lb: plan a sturdy bench.
  • Class 4. The lid must stay closed while it runs.
  • Venting. Fumes must leave the room; see laser engraver safety.
  • LightBurn limits. xTool says LightBurn runs the P2S but not its camera or autofocus.
  • Extras add up. The riser base, rotary, conveyor and purifier are sold separately or in bundles ($4,169 and $5,069 when we checked).

Who should buy it

Anyone starting a sign, acrylic or wood-cutting side business who wants a capable CO2 laser without industrial size. For Class 1 safety and a much bigger bed, the xTool P3 costs $6,999. If you prefer LightBurn and a longer warranty, the OMTech Polar Lite is $2,199.99 with two years of cover.

Frequently asked questions

Can the xTool P2S cut clear acrylic?

Yes. CO2 lasers work at about 10,600 nm, which acrylic absorbs, so the P2S cuts clear and coloured acrylic. xTool rates it for 20 mm acrylic in one pass. Blue diode lasers can't cut clear acrylic.

Does the P2S need to be vented outside?

You need to remove the fumes, either through the exhaust hose to a window or with a purifier. The Gadgeteer's reviewer smelled almost nothing while cutting acrylic with xTool's AP2 purifier, and found the IF2 inline fan through a window very effective.

What's the difference between the xTool P2 and P2S?

The same 55W tube, 600 × 305 mm bed and one-pass cutting figures. xTool lists double the X-axis acceleration on the P2S (6,400 vs 3,200 mm/s²), and reviewers note stronger exhaust and air assist (200 kPa, which The Gadgeteer says is 33% higher than the P2).

Is the P2S Class 1?

No. xTool lists it as Class 4 and contrasts it with the Class 1 xTool P3. Keep the lid closed and follow the safety instructions.
