Glowforge Aura

6.6/10 research score Blue diode

List price $1,199 (as of Oct 2026)

Best for: Beginners who want the simplest possible setup for paper and thin wood

Our verdict

The Aura is one of the easiest lasers to start with, and reviewers loved the setup and Proofgrade presets. But 6W is weak for $1,199 list ($999 on sale when we checked): enclosed 10–20W rivals cost less and cut faster, and the Aura needs Wi-Fi and Glowforge's cloud app. Buy it for simplicity, not value.

Glowforge built its name on easy CO2 lasers. The Aura is its "craft laser": a 6W blue diode in a Class 1 case with cameras, autofocus and a passthrough slot, run from Glowforge's web app. It lists at $1,199 and was on sale for $999 when we checked. We compared Glowforge's specifications with reviewers' hands-on findings. We have not tested it ourselves; see how we research.

What reviewers liked

Reviewed's Camryn Rabideau found "It's surprisingly easy to use—even for beginners". The lid camera shows your material in the app so you can drag designs onto it, and Proofgrade materials carry QR codes that set the right power and speed automatically. Her starter keychain took about 20 minutes. Tom's Hardware also praised its ease of use and the Proofgrade presets.

The catches

  • 6W is slow and shallow. Tom's Hardware listed the shallow cutting depth as a con; Glowforge itself caps cuts at 1/4 in and advises against medium plywood.
  • Running costs. Reviewed found Proofgrade materials pricey (around $12.50–$18.50 for a 6 × 12 in hardwood sheet) and noted the Premium subscription ($50 a month or $239 a year at the time) for unlimited catalog access.
  • Fumes. You need the Aura Personal Filter ($399 at the time of Reviewed's test) or a window vent.
  • Internet dependence. No Wi-Fi or Glowforge server, no printing.
  • Material limits. No glass, clear, white or blue acrylic, and Glowforge warns that cutting vinyl "will immediately destroy your laser".

Value against rivals

The Aura's problem is the market around it. The xTool M2 gives you a Class 1 enclosure, cameras and built-in air assist with a 10W laser from $499, and the WeCreat Vista adds flame detection and LightBurn support for $590. At $1,199 list you can almost reach the 40W, Class 1 xTool S1. See all the options in Glowforge alternatives.

Who should buy it

Choose the Aura if you want the gentlest possible start, plan to use Proofgrade materials and Glowforge's catalog, and mostly cut paper, cardstock and thin wood. If you want to cut thicker wood, run without the internet or use LightBurn, a rival will serve you better.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Glowforge Aura a CO2 laser?

No. It uses a 6W blue diode laser (450 nm). Glowforge's Plus HD and Pro HD use 40W and 45W CO2 tubes. Because it is a blue diode, the Aura can't cut glass, clear, white or blue acrylic.

Does the Glowforge Aura need the internet?

Yes. Glowforge lists Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz) as required, and you design and print from its web app. If your internet or Glowforge's servers are down, you can't print. See our guide to a [Glowforge showing Offline](/troubleshooting/glowforge/offline).

Do you need Glowforge Premium or Proofgrade materials?

No. Any laser-safe material works, with manual settings. Proofgrade materials carry QR codes that set everything automatically, which Reviewed found very convenient but expensive. Premium is an optional subscription for the design catalog and extra features.

How thick can the Aura cut?

Glowforge says it cuts materials up to 1/4 in (about 6 mm) thick and engraves materials up to 3/4 in thick with the tray removed. It recommends against medium plywood.
