Glowforge troubleshooting
Glowforge Stuck on Focusing, Centering or Scanning? Fixes
When a Glowforge sits on "Focusing", "Centering", "Homing" or "Scanning" for more than ten minutes: dirty lid camera, reflective material, Wi-Fi uploads, the crumb tray and the laser head connection, from Glowforge's help articles.
Quick fix
If calibration runs past ten minutes, turn the Glowforge off, wipe the lid camera with a lens wipe, remove the material and make sure the crumb tray is seated, then turn it on. Reflective or cut-up material and weak Wi-Fi are the other common causes. On an Aura, reseat the laser head connector. If the head doesn't move at all, contact support.
Every time a Glowforge starts or you open the lid, it calibrates: the status next to the Print button shows "Centering", "Focusing", "Homing" or "Scanning" for a few minutes. If it stays there for more than ten minutes, Glowforge says the usual causes are a dirty camera, material it can't process, a Wi-Fi problem and, rarely, hardware. These steps follow Glowforge's help articles (checked October 18, 2026).
Quick fix
- Turn the Glowforge off and lift the lid.
- Gently wipe the lid camera with a ZEISS lens wipe.
- Remove any material and make sure the crumb tray is in place.
- Turn it on. If the head moves, let calibration finish; if it doesn't move at all, contact support.
1. Check the material
Highly reflective materials, such as mirrored acrylic or polished metal, can make the image too bright to process. Material with holes, voids or odd shapes can confuse it too. Remove the material, or use a full plain sheet, and try again.
2. Clean the camera and optics
Dust on the lid camera lens can stop it capturing a usable picture. Glowforge's cleaning guides cover the lid camera and the other optics; it suggests cleaning Performance Series machines about every 40 hours of printing.
3. Seat the crumb tray
Make sure the crumb tray sits flat and fully in place. Owners on Glowforge's forum report that debris under the tray can stop it sitting level.
4. Fix weak Wi-Fi
Calibration uploads camera images, so a poor signal can stall it. If the app also shows "Offline", work through Glowforge says Offline first.
5. Aura: reseat the laser head
Glowforge lists stalls on "Focusing", "Homing" or "Scanning" among the signs of a loose laser head connection on the Aura. Follow its head connection guide to reseat the connector with the machine off.
6. Contact support
If it's still stuck, contact Glowforge support and tell them whether calibration has ever worked and when the problem started, what you've tried, and whether the head moves while the status message shows. Owners on the forum report that some cases come from the lid cable or other hardware, which only support can diagnose from the machine's logs.
